Kate's bakes & buys

I have ordered two pairs of shoes. Yes two. I saw my entire end-of-year bonus go up in smoke, just because I couldn’t resist online shopping. Now all I can do is patiently wait for them to arrive, and hope they fit.

The first pair is by Robert Clergerie, the second by MM6. I already have a million ways in my head to wear and pair them. Sigh. Shoes. Sigh.

I’ve been quite active in the kitchen lately. I’ve made a deal with myself. I won’t eat bread and sweet bakes unless I make them myself. Too much crap in shop-bought carbs, and I have all the equipment to make it myself, so why wouldn’t I?

Time, yes time can be an issue. Although I made a bread the other weekend which I allowed to rise in the fridge. It took ages (but it didn’t matter, as I was away), but turned out perfectly.

On the pics: a batch of soft rolls I made for pack lunch. They were delicious. Second pic is what I brought over to my dad’s last Sunday. Apple and sour cherry tartlets. And picture number three shows what is about to come. My lovely man ordered these books online and I got them yesterday (I got a lattice roller as well, can’t wait to use it). So happy with this new source of great recipes and tricks for even better baking..

I’ve got two basic item addictions. White t-shirts and grey sweaters. They both seem so simple, but you’d be surprised how many variations exist.

During an online session of window shopping, I bumped into these MM6  jumpers. Both grey, both with great details. Even though MM6 is a Belgian label, based in Paris, I had to order it online (based in Italy), as they didn’t stock the right models/colours in the Brussels boutique.

As I’m a big fan of cable knitwear, I chose the first one. It arrived yesterday and is just perfect. The front panel with the cables feels a bit like a quilt, so it will keep me warm this autumn. Can’t wait to pair and wear it!

I’m probably the last one on earth to get one of these iPhone cassette cases, but I couldn’t be happier (on a phone cover base, that it)! I had an iPhone 3 until it got stolen recently, so excuse me for joining the cool kids so late.
I love the retro look, and practical plastic case that comes with it. Two cool gadgets in one go, got to love it!

It’s so cold outside. Even though the temperatures are still above 10 degrees, it somehow feels horribly colder. I’ve worn my Shetland jumper the other day, that’s how cold I was. (also, we’re still not putting the heating on, as that would result in crazy bills and we’ve got enough of those).

Anyway.

To bake my way out of the winter blues, I decided to make a Dundee cake. Shetland jumper + Dundee cake = Scottish approach. I picked the recipe from the Hairy Biker, my favourite cooking duo. A couple of hours later, the cake was ready. Two days later, there still is some left (it serves 10!) and the taste just gets better by the day.

I’m totally into soap these days. Don’t know where this comes from, but I love the squeaky clean feeling after a soapy shower. Choosing a bar of soap somehow also feels way more satisfactory than picking up a bottle of shower gel.
I went for shiso soap by Roger & Gallet, which smells just perfect. Shiso is a Japanese aromatic herb, with a delicate fragrance. It came with a plastic soap box, which will be reused over and over!
I’m getting old :-)

After Lorraine Pascale made a ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Zebra’ cake during her BBC show, the internet was buzzing with pictures and recipes. The real recipe was nowhere to be found, neither was a video tutorial on how to get the special marble effect.

I love cake, so I set my mind on baking this one a couple of weekends ago. Making the batter is a piece of cake (ha!), but the piping bag adventure afterwards is quite an event. I wish I used a bit more batter per dollop, as the zebra stripes are very close to each other. But then again, I’m quite pleased with the result.

Note: taste wise, I was a bit disappointed. the cake is made with oil instead of butter, which gives it an unusual taste. I might try it again with a butter/oil mix and bigger stripes. (Or coloured stripes, how cool would white and pink be? or orange and black for Halloween?)

Hello new jumper! Woollen and warm, with a big statement K!
Colder days are coming up, but I secretly don’t mind as they allow for my favourite of all clothes: knitwear.
I’m not a big logo lover, but how could I resist a jumper with my initial on it? K is for Kate!! (and Kenzo … and knitwear! :-))
